What is a Zine?

"Zine" is taken from the last half of the word "magazine" & is a self-published booklet or pamphlet produced in small batches. They come in a variety of different forms & can contain anything the maker chooses.

 

While zines are not new (zine history is as old as the printed word & they have their radical roots in liberation movements), they are having renewed interest. Zines have begun to be more sought-after than they have been outside DIY-culture. The rise of disinformation, AI slop, & the elite capture of online media means that people are turning elsewhere to find information, connection, & resistance.

 

Zines are there to meet that need.

 

Zines are a piece of physical, print media, that cannot be easily altered without showing signs of alteration. As something that is made completely by another human, you can be sure it's free of the inherently unethical nature of generative AI. Zines being made & distributed by people or groups in your community fosters a human connection that encourages creative thinking & collective imagining.

 

When we create these items, print copies of them, & share them, we are building connections with people that don't rely on the fickle whims of billionaire-controlled algorithms.

 

Red Current Distro typically carries information-based zines for political education although we do occasional runs on other items of interest or entertainment.
